How to Build a Tortoise Burrow

Several tortoise species require the safety of a burrow to adapt to life in captivity. Tortoise burrows are an essential part of any outdoor environment since they provide a secure place for a tortoise to escape the heat of the day, hide from inclement weather and avoid potential predators. Tortoises are not picky when it comes to using a burrow, and you can easily construct one in their outdoor environment using simple materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any grass and use a shovel to level the surface of the soil in the area where you want to construct the burrow.

    • 2

Saw a metal trash can in half vertically using an electric saw.

    • 3

Place one half of the cut trash can in the cleared area with the opening in the direction you want the burrow to face and press the edges firmly into the soil.

    • 4

Pack soil around the base of the trashcan and continue to pile it up until the entire trashcan is covered. Smooth and shape the soil to give the burrow a natural appearance.

    • 5

Dig a small trench at the front of the burrow entrance that leads away from the entrance to prevent water from pooling inside the burrow when it rains.
