How to Care for Japalura Splendida Eggs

Japalura splendida lizards, which also go by the name Chinese Tree Dragons, are a breed of lizard that can live up to three years. Once the Japalura splendida lizard reaches 18 months, she may be used for breeding. During the mating process, the male Japalura splendida will position himself on top of the female and bite down on her neck. Shortly after this is done, the female will become impregnated. After six weeks, the lizard will begin looking for a safe place to lay her eggs.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a nesting box for the Japalura splendida by filling a large aquarium tank with a mixture of sand, peat moss and soil. There should be several inches of dirt for the lizard to dig through before laying her eggs.

    • 2

Mist the soil so it remains moist, but not soaking wet. If using a special gauges for the tank, it should be set to around 70 percent humidity. If not, you should mist daily.

    • 3

Remove the Japalura splendida from the tank after she lays her eggs. She should be placed back in her normal tank while the eggs incubate.

    • 4

Keep the egg tank air ventilated with a temperature of between 82 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. More females will hatch if the temperature is kept on the lower end, around 82 degrees, while more males with hatch if the temperature is closer to 86 degrees.

    • 5

Avoid moving the eggs. Japalura splendida eggs do not need to be turned or separated after being laid. If the eggs are touched too much, they will fail to develop properly.

    • 6

Wait about 74 days and the eggs will begin to hatch. The baby lizards should be kept in the tank away from their parents. Japalura splendida lizards have no parental instinct and will often kill the babies if they're in the same tank.
