How to Introduce Crested Geckos

Crested geckos are common pets among reptile lovers due to their ease of care and inexpensive requirements. Once thought extinct, they were re-discovered off the coast of Australia in 1994. Now crested geckos are more common in captivity than in the wild. While crested geckos are solitary animals, sometimes they can live together in captivity if they are introduced correctly. Males should never be housed together, but fixed mixed-gender couples can be, along with groups of females.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean your gecko cage thoroughly before adding your new pet. This ensures it does not already smell like the other gecko's property.

    • 2

Add new bedding once the cage is clean.

    • 3

Arrange all toys and cage accessories in the cage in a new way, so that it is a new environment for both geckos. This puts them on equal grounds socially.

    • 4

Put your new crested gecko into the clean cage alone so that it can explore for about 20 minutes. This gives it a chance to get comfortable.

    • 5

Add your original pet to the cage and watch the geckos interact closely for the first few hours, removing the new gecko if they get into a serious confrontation.
