Is an alligator endangered or extinct?
Alligators are not endangered or extinct. The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and the Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) are classified as species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, two other alligator species, the black caiman (Melanosuchus niger) and the spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus), are listed as vulnerable and near threatened, respectively.
