Dropping Potential
-
If you purchase a hamster for a small child, your hamster is at greater risk of being dropped. If picked up in a careless manner, the hamster may jump, leading to a fall. A mishandled hamster may also nip, which could scare your child ̵1; or you ̵1; causing you to drop your pet. Children younger than 8 are often unable to properly handle a hamster.
Proper Handling
-
Pick up your hamster by placing your fingers around his middle. Then place the hamster in your other palm, keeping a hold on him with both hands. Young children may have trouble managing this gentle maneuver. A firm, but gentle two-handed grip is essential to prevent falls.
Broken Limb
-
If you drop your hamster, recover him quickly. Hamsters are quick, so he may scurry under a bed or shelf and be hard to retrieve. Examine your hamster for any obvious injury. If he has trouble walking or seems to be dragging a leg, take him to a veterinarian specializing in small animals immediately because he may have a fractured or broken limb. Broken limbs are usually left to heal on their own because the hamster will chew off any wrapping. The leg will likely heal in a crooked manner, but your hamster should be OK. During healing time, remove your hamster̵7;s toys and exercise wheel to prevent further damage. You should also avoid handling him.
Shock
-
Although a hamster can usually bounce back after a minor drop, some can go into shock. If your hamster exhibits signs of breathing heavy, shivering or lifelessness, he may be in shock. Rub him gently to restore blood circulation and help him recover. If his condition does not improve within an hour, consult a veterinarian.

What Happens If You Drop a Hamster?
Hamsters make good first pets, as they are inexpensive to care for, don̵7;t take a lot of room or effort and can be sociable. However, proper handling is paramount in keeping your hamster healthy and happy. While you may be tempted to play with your hamster, always handle him gently and be careful not to drop him. If you do drop your hamster, you could do serious damage to his small body.
