How to Make Paper-Based Pet Bedding

Paper-based bedding materials are the safest for small rodents such as hamsters, guinea pigs, mice and rats. Pine and cedar shavings are dangerous and other bedding materials can cause respiratory problems, especially in rats. Wood shavings can also harbor parasites or trigger allergies. Commercial paper beddings are widely available, but to cut costs and do a spot of recycling, try making your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect used paper, for example envelopes and letters. Tear off any plastic windows or areas with printing and discard. Save the unprinted paper in a bag. Also collect cardboard, such as tubes and boxes.

    • 2

Pass the paper through a shredder or tear into thin strips. Collect in the bag until needed.

    • 3

Tear the cardboard into small pieces about 1 or 2 inches across. Save with the paper.

    • 4

Lay several inches of this bedding in your pet's cage. Replace once a week.

    • 5

Tear bathroom tissue into thin strips and place on top of the new bedding. This forms a soft lining for the animal's nestbox. Use plain white tissue, not scented or colored brands.
