How to Clean a Degu

A degu is a small rodent with brown hair and a light belly that some people like to keep as pets. It grows to only about 6 inches long in the body, and they bear a resemblance to gerbils and chinchillas. Although they groom frequently, degus need to bathe on a regular basis in order to keep their fur clean and healthy. Dust baths are the recommended way to do this, and degus do all the bathing work themselves as long as you provide the materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour some chinchilla dust into a small dish or container and place it in the cage. The degu should head right for it and take a bath on its own.

    • 2

Remove the bath when the degu is done with it. Don't leave it in there for more than 10 minutes, or the dish will be used as a toilet. However, if you are willing to change the dust every day, the dish can double as a dust bath and a litterbox.

Give the degu a bath at least once every week, and up to once a day.
