What Kind of Cages Do Hamsters, Mice & Gerbil Use?

Small rodents such as hamsters, mice and gerbils are popular small pets. They are easy to keep, don't require a lot of space, and can be lovable companions for the right owner. Three main types of cages are available for owners of small pet. These include plastic tube cages, aquariums and wire cages with plastic pan bottoms.
  1. Plastic Tube Cages

    • Plastic tube cages are readily available in pet stores and general stores. They're definitely the most eye- catching type of cage since you can see the mouse or small hamster running through the tubes. They are not large enough for full-sized hamsters or gerbils.

    Aquariums

    • Aquariums are more durable than plastic cages, but plain. The advantages are that your pet can't chew through glass, and the high sides prevent them from climbing out. All you need is a screen top and a weight to put on the top to keep other pets out.

    Wire Cages With Plastic Trays

    • Wire cages have a top part made of coated wire bars and have a pan at the bottom for bedding. This is the best type of cage in regards to cost, risk to the animal and ease of cleaning. Wire cages are cheaper than aquariums for their size, and the removable pan on the bottom makes cleaning easier.

    Drawbacks of Each

    • Your pet might chew through the plastic tubes or detach the tubes, allowing them to escape. Hamsters sometimes stuff the tubes with bedding, causing death by dehydration or suffocation.

Aquariums are heavy, can break and can be expensive if you need a larger size.

If opting for a wire cage, make sure it has narrow enough spaces between the bars to prevent small mice or dwarf hamsters from escaping. Also be aware that gerbils and hamsters will sometimes chew through the bottom of the pan.
