Things You'll Need
- Metal trash can with lid and drain plug
- Elastic bungee straps
- Water
- Wood board, 1-by-4-inch, 18 inches long
- Outdoor picnic table
- Bait
Instructions
Place the plug tightly in position at the bottom of the trash can.
Set the trash can next to the picnic table and add 10 gallons of water.
Set the 18-inch board on top of the picnic table so that one end is resting on the picnic table and the other is resting on the trash can. Slide the board so that roughly 8 inches are over the top of the trash can.
Place the bait on the trash can side of the board. A raccoon will attempt to take the bait and his weight will cause the board to collapse into the trash can along with him. The water will soak into his fur and make him too heavy to jump out of the trash can and the smooth side of the metal trash can will make it impossible for him to climb out.
Place the lid on the trash can once you have caught a raccoon. Secure the lid down with the bungee cords.
Drain the water by opening the drain plug. Replace the plug once it is done draining. Contact your local animal control center for a recommended relocation site and deliver the raccoon to that location.
Free the raccoon by gently tipping the trash can onto its side, unhooking the bungee cords and quickly removing the lid and stepping away until the raccoon leaves the area.
