How to Pick up Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are charming and easy pets to care for. They are a nice alternative when space and schedules do not allow for dogs, cats or other larger animals. When caring for and socializing your guinea pig, it is often necessary to pick up the animal. It is important to do so in a way that is safe for both the guinea pig and the handler.

Instructions

  1. Bare-Handed

    • 1

Place one hand under the guinea pig's belly and the other hand under its hind quarters.

    • 2

Lift the guinea pig in a smooth motion to hold it against your body. Both the proximity to your body and the hand under the hind quarters will help the guinea pig to feel secure.

    • 3

Place the guinea pig down in the desired location. Keep the animal close to your body as you bend over. Then lower it all the way to the surface and release both hands.

    Using a Towel

    • 4

Place one hand under the guinea pig's belly.

    • 5

Lay a hand towel gently across the guinea pig's back allowing its face to peek out.

    • 6

Scoop the towel under the guinea pig's hind quarters as you lift the animal to hold it against your body. The towel will help an anxious guinea pig feel more secure, and will help you hold a wiggly guinea pig more safely.
