A family containing a solitary genus, *Platacanthomys*.
- One species, *Platacanthomys lasiurus*, known as the flat-tailed cloud rat, is found in the mountains of Northern Laos and Vietnam.
- It is closely associated with broadleaf evergreen forests and is known from areas between 1,200 and 2,000 m (3,900 and 6,600 ft) ASL.
- This rat has a body length of 131–210 mm (5.2–8.3 in) and a long, bushy tail which measures 205–300 mm (8.1–11.8 in).
- It weighs between 147 and 180 g (5.2 and 6.3 oz).
- This rat is primarily arboreal and mostly active at dawn and dusk.
- Its main food source consists of bamboo shoots and leaves, but it will occasionally eat other plant material, fruits and seeds.
