The island was once entirely forested, but was cleared for agriculture in the 1800s. There are no native predators on the island that could have kept a deer population in check.
However, there are several other fascinating animals on the island, including:
* Red foxes: Introduced for hunting, they are now a common sight.
* Coyotes: These canines are not native but have established a thriving population.
* Beavers: These industrious rodents are found near water sources.
* Black-capped chickadees, blue jays, and many other bird species: PEI is a birdwatcher's paradise.
So, while you won't spot any deer, there's plenty of other wildlife to observe on your PEI adventure!
