Why do skunks squeal?

Skunks don't actually squeal. While they can make a variety of sounds, including growls, hisses, and even a "chuffing" noise, squealing is not a typical sound they make.

Skunks primarily use their vocalizations as a warning signal to potential threats.

* Growls and hisses are usually the first warning signs, indicating they feel threatened and are ready to defend themselves.

* Chuffing is a more direct warning, often accompanied by stamping their feet and raising their tail.

If these warnings are ignored, a skunk will resort to its infamous spray as a last resort.

So, while you might hear skunks make other noises, you're unlikely to hear them squealing.
