Skunks & Bird Seed

Skunks, when left alone, are beautiful creatures. When threatened, however, skunks are smelly pests. How can you deter skunks from making your residence their local hangout? Keep a lid on your trash can, and don't leave out birdseed.
  1. Significance

    • Skunks are scavengers and they eat anything they can get their little mitts on, such as bugs and snakes, eggs and garbage. They have also been known to snack on bird seed.

    Prevention

    • To prevent skunks from frequenting your home or yard, keep bird seed in a feeder with an opening just small enough for a bird. Buy feeders that are rodent and pest-proof to deter skunks and other pesky critters.

    Warning

    • Never approach a skunk in the wild. Skunks are carriers of rabies and distemper. Call your local animal control office for help with removing unwanted skunks.

    Fun Fact

    • In some states it is legal to own a pet skunk.

    Directions

    • According to skunk experts at skunkhaven.net, if you do own a skunk as a pet you should never feed it bird seed.

    Effects

    • According to the experts at Skunk Haven, skunks have a very sensitive digestive system which makes digesting birdseed, particularly sunflower seeds, very difficult.
