Is it illegal to own a pit bull in North Carolina?

It is legal to own a pit bull in certain municipalities in North Carolina. There are no state laws currently in place banning dogs of any species, with the exception of specific ordinances in certain municipalities. Pit bull and other restrictive ordinances usually require owners to spay or neuter their pets, carry proof of a substantial liability insurance policy, have their dogs muzzled in public, or have their pets pass an aggressive behavior test. Some North Carolina municipalities including Greenville, Kinston, and Charlotte have bans in place, while Asheville, Raleigh, and Goldsboro have none.
