How to Feed a Royal Python

The royal python, or python reguis, is a python species that is smaller and more docile than the ball python. Because of this, royal pythons are usually recommended as a beginner snake pet for a person who is interested in owning snakes. They can be found in most pet stores and in the wild. Royal pythons are between 3 and 4 feet long on average and generally do not grow longer than that. They are notorious for fasting and do not need to be fed often.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed a royal python hatchling fluffs, or infant rats. When the snake is young feed it two to three fluffs once a week.

    • 2

Feed the python small mice when it has matured past infancy. This usually occurs several months after the snake has hatched, when it is about half a foot to a foot long. Feed the adolescent python a live small mouse once a week by simply dropping the mouse in the python's cage and letting the python hunt it.

    • 3

Step up the size of the mouse as the snake gets bigger and continue feeding the python once a week as a rule. A pet store clerk will be able to guide you on the size of mouse needed relating to the size of your snake. In the winter, pythons tend to fast. If your python exhibits this behavior, try feeding it every three weeks until it wants to eat again.
