How to Feed an African Rock Python

The African rock python is a large constricting snake, much like the Burmese python. On average these snakes will grow to be anywhere from 16 to 20 feet long. They are suitable to be kept as pet snakes but must be cared for properly, which means keeping the snake as well as yourself out of harm's way. Using proper feeding procedures will ensure your snake always gets its meal and that you stay completely out of danger in the process.

Things You'll Need

  • Pre-killed rat (large snake, 8 feet or more)
  • Pre-killed pinky mice (small snake, 8 feet or less)

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands with antibacterial soap. This will remove any bacteria from your hands that may be harmful to the snake and transferred through feeding.

    • 2

Grab a pre-killed rat or pinky mouse with a pair of long-handled feeding tongs. You can choose which feed to use by looking at the widest point of your python. If it is smaller than a rat, feed it with pinky mice.

    • 3

Open the lid of your tank on the opposite end from where the snake is resting. Move slowly and cautiously so as not to alarm the snake.

    • 4

Hold the bait in the tank, using the tongs to attract the snake to eat.

    • 5

Remove the tongs from the tank and secure the lid after the African python has taken its meal.
