How to Raise the Humidity in a Snake's Tank

Many tropical species of snakes thrive in an environment that has a higher humidity. The moisture aids the animal in molting, which is the process of shedding skin. These same snakes will suffer side-effects from remaining in an environment that is too dry, including a decreased appetite and dehydration. There are several ways to increase the humidity in your snake's enclosure to ensure it remains healthy and well hydrated.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep a large water dish inside the snake's cage. Along with keeping the snake properly hydrated, the water will evaporate and add moisture to the enclosure. Do not overfill the water dish of you risk your your snake drowning.

    • 2

Set the water dish near the cage's heating source. This will help the water evaporate more quickly. Using this method requires a more constant monitoring of the water dish to ensure that your snake remains well hydrated.

    • 3

Cover half of the cage's top with a damp towel. This will provide humidity to the cage without compromising air flow inside of the enclosure.

    • 4

Spray the snake's cage with a light misting of warm water from a plastic spray bottle one to two times a day. Aim the spray toward the snake, the cage walls and the substrate. The snake will enjoy licking the water droplets off the sides of the cage while the extra water adds humidity.

Cover the bottom of the cage with a bedding, or substrate, that will absorb water more efficiently. Orchid bark and moss will provide a more humid environment than sand, regular wood shavings or torn pieces of paper.
