How to Maintain Humidity in My Python's Terrarium

Failure to maintain the proper habitat for your python can mean the difference between life and death for your pet. One aspect of python terrarium care is maintaining the correct level of humidity within the enclosure. The native habitat of the ball python -- the most common species kept as pets -- is typically temperate to arid with low humidity. As such, keeping the humidity in your python terrarium between 50 percent and 60 percent is usually ideal. Failure to maintain humidity in your python's terrarium can result in health issues like fecal impactions, skin infections and improper shedding.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a hygrometer in the terrarium. A hygrometer is a tool used to measure the humidity in the air. Attach the hygrometer to the side of the terrarium, approximately half way between the floor and ceiling of the tank.

    • 2

Place a container of water between 72 degrees and 79 degrees Fahrenheit inside the enclosure. The container should be large enough for your python to submerge itself in for soaking and drinking. As this water evaporates, it will add humidity to the terrarium.

    • 3

Use a well-ventilated lid for the terrarium to allow for adequate air flow, which will reduce moisture buildup.

    • 4

Monitor the hygrometer on a daily basis to ensure that it remains between 50 percent and 60 percent.
