How to Seal the Inside of a Snake Reptile Cage

You can make snake cages out of aquariums for smaller snakes or make large wooden enclosures for larger species. The type of cage the snake resides in makes little difference on how to seal the inside edges of the cage.

Instructions

Clean out the cage prior to placing any sealant into the cage. Remove all the substrate, which is the dirt, sand or other material covering your cage floor, from the cage. Vacuum out the cage. Focus on the corners and edges where the sealant will be placed. Wash down the tank with soap and water. If the tank is wood, make sure that you have removed any soap residue.

Place a thin bead of silicone sealant around the edges of the tank. The bead does not have to be very thick. The sealant needs to cover areas where moisture can seep through or where heat may be lost. The bottom and corners of the cage should be fully sealed.

Use a putty knife edge to wipe away any extra sealant. Place the corner of the putty knife into one corner of the cage and move it smoothly towards the opposite corner. Wipe off the excess and repeat until there is hardly any sealant visible. Allow the sealant to dry completely, usually about an hour, before starting to move equipment back into the cage.
