How to Get a California King Snake to Eat

Adult California king snakes should eat one to two large mice every seven to 10 days, sometimes eating slightly less often in the winter. California king snakes will occasionally refuse meals, seemingly inexplicably; however, that is usually a problem that can be solved at home. This is quite a common problem, so you should not get worried; but if your snake doesn't eat for more than two months or visibly loses weight, you should take it to a vet who specializes in reptiles, as there could be an underlying health issue.

Instructions

    • 1

Check if your snake is about to shed. California king snakes close to shedding will often refuse to eat until after shedding has occurred.

    • 2

Make sure your California king snake is warm enough and comfortable. Snakes are cold-blooded, so if you don't keep your pet warm enough with UV light and heat pads, it will become sluggish.

    • 3

Measure your snake across at its widest part. Don't feed your pet any prey that is bigger than this. Although snakes have been known to eat extremely big prey compared to body size, some will not want to eat if the food appears too large.

    • 4

Heat the frozen mouse slowly in a bowl of warm water. Snakes often dislike eating frozen prey, so this may encourage your pet to take food.

    • 5

Clasp the mouse firmly in the feeding tongs and offer it to your snake. Move the mouse around in front of your snake. This should encourage the snake to strike and then feed.
