Behavior
-
In the north, water moccasins hibernate during the winter months. These snakes are most active at night, when they can usually be found in the water. On bright sunny days, they can be found stretched out or coiled up somewhere in the shade.
Feeding Habits
-
Water moccasins are omnicarnivorous, meaning that they will eat just about anything with meat in it. They have even been known to resort to cannibalism. Common food items for the water moccasin include small alligators, small turtles, amphibians, mammals, birds and fish.
Habitat
-
True to its name, the water moccasin typically dwells in bodies of water, such as swamps, marshes, creeks, streams as well as the shores of lakes and ponds. Occasionally, water moccasins are found in salt water, as well.
