The Disadvantages of Corn Cob Bedding

Corn cob bedding is made from crushed or ground corn cobs. It is used to cover the floor of animal cages, so it functions as a toilet, provides a soft surface for walking, and may be used to burrow or play in, depending on the animal.
  1. Mold

    • Because of its absorbency, corn cob bedding has a tendency to grow mold and fungus, creating a bacteria-ridden environment for pets, according to AFRMA. This, in turn, can cause unpleasant odors.

    Maintenance

    • To avoid mold and fungus buildup, corn cob bedding must be changed frequently. This means more work for animal caretakers and a higher chance of illness for animals.

    Injury

    • Male hedgehogs may get pieces of corn cob bedding trapped in their penis sheaths, leading to infection and irritation. Infections can lead to death if not properly treated, according to Hedgehog Central. If used with snakes, corn cob bedding can cause skin dryness and intestinal blockage if swallowed, according to King Snake. Because of the many possible complications associated with corn cob bedding, it is probably not the best choice for small animals.
