Common Garter Snake
-
There are four types of garter snakes in Oregon, but only two, the northwestern and the common garter snake, are generally found in the northwest part of the state. The common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) is typically the largest and can grow up to 52 inches long from head to tail. Although they come in a variety of colors and patterns, they are usually somewhat brown or blackish and typically have a yellow to yellowish-green stripe on the back. They are often seen with red spots on the sides. Interestingly, the common garter can give off a nasty skunk-like smell when captured.
Northern Alligator Lizard
-
The northern alligator lizard (Elgaria coerulea) is a long-bodied lizard that can grow to a length of 13 inches from head to tail. It is typically brown or brownish-green with a lighter color on its abdomen, and has a triangular head. The northern alligator lizard prefers a colder and wetter environment than most lizards and is typically found hiding under rotting logs or rocks in the wooded areas of northwest Oregon. Mating occurs in April or June, with the female giving birth within 7 to 10 weeks thereafter.
Northwestern Garter Snake
-
The northwestern garter snake (Thamnophis ordinoides) is somewhat similar in appearance to the common garter snake, but is usually much smaller (13 to 24 inches). It may have a red, orange, yellow, or even reddish-orange stripe along its back. The northwestern garter snake prefers meadows and open grassy areas. These snakes carry the name "garter" because their coloring and appearance were once thought to resemble a woman's garter.
Rubber Boa
-
The rubber boa (Charina bottae) is considered one of the smaller members of the boa family. A male rubber boa typically grows to about 18 inches long while the female is slightly longer at 22 inches. The rubber boa is normally brown, but the shade of brown can very from light to tan or even dark-chocolate. A slow-moving snake, it prefers to stay hid under logs or rocks. Unlike most snakes, the rubber boa prefers a cooler environment and is rarely seen sunning itself or climbing on vegetation.

There are more than 30 species of reptiles in the state of Oregon. These reptiles include turtles, lizards and snakes. Although there are snakes and lizards throughout the state of Oregon, the majority of reptiles are found in the southeastern part of the state. A few, however, seem to prefer living in the northwest.
