How to Feed a Snake Chicken

Feed your pet snake a baby chick as a treat. While chicken makes for a great snack for snakes, it should not be their sole source of food. Many pet retail stores like Petsmart and online stores offer frozen chicks specifically for feeding pet snakes. Frozen food keeps a pet snake out of harm's way from unexpected attacks by its prey. However, convincing a snake to eat a frozen chick can be a challenge.

  1. How to Feed a Snake Chicken

    • 1

Buy whole frozen chicks or chicken from a pet supply retailer. Petsmart is a retail store and Petcarerx.com an online store that offer frozen food. Store the food in a freezer for a month to eliminate any disease it might contain.

    • 2

Place the chick in the refrigerator 24 to 48 hours prior to feeding the snake. This will thaw the chick and get it ready for eating.

    • 3

Take the chick out of the refrigerator and place it in a tub of warm water to bring it to or above room temperature.

    • 4

Add chicken broth to the warm water. Let it soak so that a live animal scent is on the chicken and more enticing for the snake. Live scent can also be purchased at a pet store.

    • 5

Dry the chick completely with a paper towel so there is no moisture. The chicken broth scent should remain on the chick.

    • 6

Place the chick in the snake cage with long tongs to avoid getting bitten. Wait to see if the snake is interested in the prey.

    • 7

Move the chick around a little in the cage with the tongs to imitate life. Snakes like to kill their prey, so this should entice them. Once the snake strikes, remove the tongs and let the snake feed.
