Stargazing Disease in Snakes

What is often called stargazing disease is actually a set of symptoms found in snakes and reptiles of all types. When you notice these symptoms in a pet snake, it can signify severe health problems for the animal. Learning more about what is called stargazing disease is an important factor in making the right decision for your pet's health.
  1. Features

    • When a snake stargazes, this meas that the snake's head and neck are pointed almost straight up. The snake's head and neck will be inclined upwards at what might be close to a 90-degree angle, and it might remain in that position for several minutes or longer. The snake may also seem disoriented, have trouble moving and it may be unable to right itself when it is placed on its back.

    Significance

    • Stargazing is an important signifier because it usually means that something has gone wrong with the snake's central nervous system. It can indicate a condition that is painful and possibly life-threatening to the snake.

    Causes

    • There are many different conditions that may cause stargazing. Encephalitis is one of the primary causes of stargazing, but viral and bacterial infections, organ dysfunction, temperature fluctuations and septic infections can also cause it. Poisoning, head injuries, and inclusion body disease (IBD), which usually attacks boas and pythons, can also cause it.

    Identification

    • Identifying the behavior known as stargazing is a simple procedure, but identifying the underlying cause requires testing from a veterinarian. Some diagnostic tests that may be used to diagnose the problem include X-rays, blood work and fecal exams.

    Considerations

    • When a snake is showing signs of stargazing disease, isolate it from the rest of your snakes. There is a chance that whatever is causing the condition might be infectious and isolating the snake reduces the chance of other snakes falling ill.
