Boa Snake Types

Boa snakes are a large species of non-poisonous snakes normally found in the tropical climates of Central and South America. They are members of the Boidae family of snakes. Boas have some of the most distinctive markings of all reptiles. Their bodies can be yellow, tan, red, green or display patterns such as diamonds, circles and ovals. Boa snakes are popular among snake collectors, but some are too dangerous to be kept as pets.
  1. Boa Constrictor

    • The boa constrictor is the most well-known and widely kept snake. They do well in captivity and make good pets for experienced snake collectors, according to Boa-Care.com. A boa constrictor born in captivity is often more docile than one born in the wild. However, it̵7;s important to remember that boa constrictors are strong and agile. Even the most docile boa constrictor can become dangerous.

    Dumeril̵7;s Boa

    • Dumeril̵7;s boa is native to Reunion Island and Madagascar. They are similar to the boa constrictor in looks, but are generally smaller. According to the Dumeril̵7;s Boa website, these snakes do well in captivity and make good pets. They are an endangered species and practically impossible to import. However, they are available to North American snake collectors because they are bred in captivity. This means no new snakes are imported, but the offspring of those already in captivity are sold.

    Madagascan Ground Boa

    • The Madagascan ground boa is native to Madagascar. It is an endangered species, and difficult to obtain outside of Madagascar. They do well when bred in captivity, so they are occasionally available for purchase outside of Madagascar. The Madagascan ground boa can be a dangerous pet. They often strike out when they are eating or are about to eat so you should never bother this snake during dinner time or for 24 hours after.

    Brazilian Rainbow Boa

    • The Brazilian rainbow boa is native to Brazil. It normally grows between 3.5 feet to 7 feet in length, which makes it small by boa standards. The Brazilian rainbow boa is popular because of its attractive colors. It̵7;s also a favorite among snake collectors because it̵7;s easy to care for.

    Emerald Tree Boa

    • The emerald tree boa is a native of the South American rain forest. It is one of the most aggressive of all the boa snakes. They do not make good pets, and dislike being handled. The emerald tree boa is not for you if you want a snake you can play with and pet. It̵7;s best for display purposes.

    Rosy Boa

    • The rosy boa is a small snake native to the United States. They are docile by nature, and make good pets for first-time snake collectors. The rosy boa rarely bites, and generally is no threat. However, the snake is fast and can be hard to capture if it escapes.
