Boa Snake Facts

A boa (boa constrictor) is a large snake found in most areas of Mexico and Argentina. Some people have attempted to keep boa constrictors as pets, but this is illegal and not encouraged by animal welfare groups.
  1. Size

    • Boa constrictors are one of the largest types of snakes, weighing approximately 60 pounds are growing to as long as 14 feet. The only snakes bigger than a boa constrictor are anacondas and pythons.

    Diet

    • Small mammals and birds are the typical meal of a boa constrictor. It constricts on its prey, squeezing it in place as it slowly swallows the animal whole.

    Danger

    • Humans generally do not need to fear boa constrictors. They are not venomous snakes, nor should they have any reason to attack or constrict a human (humans are too big to eat).

    Habitat

    • Tropical rainforests are the preferred habitat for boa constrictors because the snake enjoys humidity, hot weather and natural cover. It can often found near rivers, or even swimming in them.

    Conservation

    • Boa constrictors are not threatened by extinction but may be in the future if humans continue to hunt them for their skins.
