How to Breed Kenyan Sand Boas

The Kenyan sand boa, also known as the East African sand boa, is one of the more commonly bred breeds of sand boa in the United States. When attempting to breed a pair of sand boas, take care in preparing the ideal mating environment for the boas, as well as ensuring proper care of the newborn snakes.

      Check that both your snakes are mature and able to reproduce. An adult female will be about 18 inches long, and an adult male will be about 15 inches long, and both snakes should be no younger than 3 years old.

      Heat the terrarium throughout the mating process. The female will require the heat to bask in once she is gravid (pregnant).

      Keep the male and female separated for several weeks before attempting to mate them.

      Move the male into the female's terrarium for a few days each week, then move him back to his own. Continue introducing until conception occurs, which may take several turns in the female terrarium.

      Observe the female for signs she is gravid. A clutch should form, a bulge in her body where the babies are, and she will become less inclined to eat.

      Watch the clutch as it moves down her body. As it nears her tail, she is nearing giving birth.

      Remove the newborn snakes to a shoebox with damp paper towels where they can crawl to remove birthing membrane that remains on their bodies.

      Move the cleaned baby snakes into a second shoebox, with a water bowl, hide box and fresh paper towels.
