Examine the corn snake's temperament before handling. If it seems the snake does not want to be handled, do not force it to submit to being picked up.
Reach into the snake's cage slowly. Do not jerk or poke at the snake. Move in a slow, controlled motion. Approach the snake from the front so it knows what you are doing and you do not startle it.
Grasp the snake at about the middle of its body or at least one-third of the way down from its head. Do not grab it by the head or face.
Lift it gently out of its cage and immediately support it with two hands if necessary. Allow the snake to move freely through your fingers, down your arms or wherever it chooses to go. Never restrict the corn snake.
How to Handle Corn Snakes
Corn snakes are believed to be one of the more desirable species of snakes to have as a pet, especially for first-time owners. They are not overly aggressive and are easier to care for and handle than other snakes. There are, however, some things you should keep in mind when handling a corn snake.
