How to Make My Corn Snake's Cage More Humid

In the wild, corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus) can be found in all sorts of habitats, including humid forests and dry scrubland. In general, you should keep a pet corn snake̵7;s tank relatively dry to reduce the risk of fungal infections. However, they do need a certain amount of humidity, especially when they molt. Raising the humidity in the tank is straightforward with a humidity box.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the current humidity level in the tank with a hygrometer. This simple device is widely available from garden centers and bargain stores. A corn snake needs a tank humidity of between 40 and 55 percent.

    • 2

Adjust the valve on the plant mister to the ̶0;spray̶1; rather than ̶0;mist̶1; setting. Spray the substrate lightly with water if the tank is too dry.

    • 3

Measure the humidity of the tank after a day. Spray more water if necessary. Otherwise mist lightly every few days to maintain the correct moisture levels.

    • 4

Acquire a plastic box with a lid that will fit inside the snake's tank. Line the box with an inch or two of sphagnum moss. Spray the moss with water to thoroughly dampen it. Replace the lid and wait for a an hour.

    • 5

Cut a hole in the front of the box large enough for the snake to enter easily, but not so large that the moisture from the box escapes into the tank.

    • 6

Measure the humidity of the box. It should be 65 percent or higher; if not, add more water. Place the box in the tank. Mist the box daily to maintain high moisture levels.

    • 7

Dispose of the moss in the humidity box at least once a week. Clean the box with dishwashing liquid and hot water and rinse thoroughly before adding new moss. Damp environments encourage fungal and bacterial growth.
