How to Tell a Ball Python Is Going to Shed?

Snakes, such as ball pythons, go through a process known as ecdysis or shedding. Snakes will slough off old skin, including their eye caps. How often your ball python sheds will depend upon factors such as nutrition, age and whether your snake has external parasites. Juvenile pythons usually shed more frequently than their adult counterparts. The process of shedding can take nearly one to two weeks, indicates Pet Education. Your snake will develop external signs prior to shedding its skin.

Instructions

    • 1

Observe the underside of your ball python's belly. Ball pythons develop a slight pinkish tone to their underbellies with impending shedding.

    • 2

Look at your snake's skin. The patterns on your snake's skin will become dull in appearance and have a milky hue.

    • 3

Inspect the eyes of your snake. If the eyes become blue in color or appear cloudy, your ball python is about to shed.

    • 4

Watch for behavioral changes in your ball python. Your snake may become aggressive, inactive or try to hide prior to its shed. Your python may disregard food and develop a lack of appetite.
