How to Tell If a Female Retic Is Ready to Breed

Retic pythons, like all pythons, are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs. In a typical setting, this type of snake breeds from September through November, which coincides with an interim period between the dry and wet season in nature. In captivity, the retic is ready to breed without influence of the season. Learn how to determine if your female retic is ready to breed to ensure success.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the age of your snake to make sure she is mature. Typical female retics reach full maturity around 2.5 to 3 years of age at a length of around 13 feet.

Reduce the ambient evening temperature of the enclosure and shorten the length of daytime light; this should trigger her breeding readiness. Check if she is refusing food; a female that continues to eat is not quite ready to breed.

Introduce the male over a few days. Place him in her enclosure for 15 minutes the first day, then for a bit longer over the course of a few days. If she shows agitation - violent wagging tail and aggressive behavior - she may not be ready to breed; however, she will react to the male's presence, but it shouldn't be dramatic.
