Care of a Brazilian Red Tarantula

Brazilian red tarantulas are impressive-looking spiders that have shaggy fur and reach a length of 6 inches. They are not exceptionally demanding to keep, with care needs similar to that of most other tarantulas. However, because they can fire irritating hairs and are generally quite skittish, they are not a tarantula for beginners. Bear in mind that this species can live to 13 years or more, and consider your lifestyle and future plans before acquiring one. Tarantulas are not easy to find new homes for if you become unable to look after your pet.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a 4-inch or deeper layer of chemical-free potting compost in the tank. Add a piece of bark or a plastic shelter on top to provide a hideaway.

    • 2

Position the tank in a warm room. Additional heating is not necessary if the temperature is about 70 to 80 degrees F.

    • 3

Fill the plant mister with spring water and mist the tank to raise the humidity. Being rainforest animals, Brazilian red tarantulas need high humidity levels. Keep the humidity between 70 to 80 percent.

    • 4

Feed the tarantula live crickets and other large insects such as locusts or roaches two or three times a week. Judge how many to feed by how much the tarantula eats. If it leaves any insects after 24 hours, feed it fewer the next time.

    • 5

Remove uneaten insects and insect parts as you see them and clean the tank out completely about once every six months.
