How to Keep the Humidity Up in a Tarantula Cage

Tarantulas can make good pets because of their docility. The one key component to a tarantula's survival is maintaining its climate. Without sufficient humidity, a tarantula can fall prey to inactivity, drying out and ultimately death. Depending on your species of tarantula, how you keep your humidity levels up will vary. For example, desert species such as the Chilean rose will require less humidity in comparison to tropical species such as the Mexican red knee tarantula.

Instructions

Provide a water dish for your tarantula. The dish should be large enough for your spider to fit in, but not so deep that your tarantula could potentially drown, according to the Insect Hobbyist, a website that provides information to animal hobbyists. Providing a water dish will help create humidity as the water evaporates.

Choose a suitable substrate for your tarantula. This can include orchard bark or potting soil free of fertilizers. These forms of substrates will help retain humidity within your cage.

Spritz your substrate with water from a water bottle. Desert species should have their substrates misted once a week. Tropical species will need their substrates misted twice daily. Alternatively, you can spritz the side of your cage to keep humidity levels up.
