How to Clean Your Tarantula Cage

Tarantulas might not be particularly messy pets, but their cages still need occasional cleaning to prevent the build up of pathogens. Unlike other small pets such as lizards, which need cleaning out weekly, you'll probably only need to clean the tarantula tank about twice a year, unless the cage has a mite or other infestation. Take care not to use powerful chemicals or stress your spider when you move it.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a few small holes in the lid of the box. If the box is plastic, use a knife and work from the underside of the lid upwards.

    • 2

Move the tarantula by placing a cup or tub over it and carefully sliding the cardboard underneath. Transfer it to a plastic or cardboard box while you clean the cage. Don't handle tarantulas with your bare hands, which can be stressful to them and give you a rash.

    • 3

Remove and rinse the water bowl.

    • 4

Empty the substrate and accessories such as bark into a refuse sack.

    • 5

Mix hot water with a couple of squirts of dishwashing liquid in the bucket. Wipe the tank clean with the mixture.

    • 6

Rinse the tank thoroughly. It might be easiest to do this in the bathroom tub or outside. Dry with paper towels.

    • 7

Add fresh substrate and accessories to the tank.
