How to Take Care of a Salmon Pink Spider

The pink salmon spider, also known as a bird-eating spider, is one of the largest species of spider on the planet. An adult male pink salmon spider can develop a leg span greater than 1 foot. Due to their relatively large size, pink salmon spiders require careful attention to their environment and food sources to ensure their survival and growth.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a hamster-sized terrarium for the spider. Due to its large size, standard spider-sized homes are not large enough to happily house a salmon pink spider.

    • 2

Lay a bedding of cork at the bottom of the terrarium. The spiders prefer the cork over other bedding options.

    • 3

Offer a hiding location for the spider, such as a hollow half log, if desired. Many salmon pink spiders will elect not to use a hiding spot; however, if offered, the spider may enjoy it.

    • 4

Avoid placing anything with sharp edges in the terrarium. The spider can catch itself on such an item and injure itself.

    • 5

Use a heater or heat lamp to keep the temperature inside the terrarium at 75 degrees, which is the optimal temperature for the spider. If needed, the spider can survive at slightly lower temperatures, down to 65 degrees.

    • 6

Feed the spider a large male cockroach every two days. The salmon pink spider will eat nearly anything small enough put into the cage; however, a diet of cockroaches, with the occasional pinkie mouse used as a change of pace, will suffice for a healthy spider.
