Is a squirrel solitary animal?

Squirrels may be solitary or social, depending on the species. Some squirrel species, such as the red squirrel (_Tamiasciurus hudsonicus_) and the Eastern gray squirrel (_Sciurus carolinensis_), are known to be solitary. They live alone and maintain their own territories, and they do not share food or resources with other squirrels.

Other squirrel species, such as the fox squirrel (_Sciurus niger_) and the California ground squirrel (_Otospermophilus beecheyi_), are more social. They live in groups called "clans" or "colonies," and they share food and resources with each other. Social squirrels may also cooperate to defend their territory from predators or other threats.
