When the trees are bare where do squirrels hide?

Squirrels are very clever and adaptable! They prepare for winter by hiding food and finding shelter. Here's how they do it:

* Nests: Squirrels build nests, called dreys, in trees. These are usually made of twigs and leaves, and are often high up for safety. In winter, they'll use these dreys for warmth and protection from the elements.

* Burrows: Some squirrels dig burrows underground, especially in areas with lots of trees. These burrows provide shelter from the cold and predators.

* Hollows: They also often use tree hollows, naturally formed cavities in trees, as shelter.

* Dormant: While not truly hibernating, squirrels can become torpid during the coldest months. This means they lower their body temperature and metabolism to conserve energy, staying in their nest or burrow most of the time.

So, when the trees are bare, squirrels find a cozy place to hide in a nest, burrow, or hollow, and may even become a bit more dormant to survive the winter.
