How to Keep Squirrels From Gnawing Through Electrical Cords

Squirrels may look cute, but they can cause a variety of problems, including damage to trees, lawns, gardens, vehicles and homes. When squirrels enter the home, they usually do so by entering through places such the attic, and spaces through walls and floors. They can also cause extensive damage by gnawing through electrical cords, which can pose an electrical hazard to your home. Although this can be frustrating, there are several things that you can do to prevent this from happening.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off tree branches that are close to your house -- climbing on trees is one of the most common ways for squirrels to get into homes. You should trim branches so they are no closer than 6 feet away from your home's roof lines.

Inspect the home for gaps in areas such as between walls or wood sidings. Cover all problem areas with metal flashing, copper wool or mesh. This will discourage them from gnawing their way into your home.

    • 3

Wrap trees with metal collars to prevent squirrels from getting close enough to gnaw through electrical cords. The metal collars should measure 2 feet in width, and be at least 8 inches off the ground.

Cut plastic pipes lengthwise with a PVC pipe cutter or hacksaw. Cut them 18 to 24 inches long, open them and place them around electrical cords to prevent squirrels from gnawing through them.
