Things You'll Need
- 1 pound suet
- Cooking pot
- 1 cup peanut butter
- ½ cup cornmeal
- ½ cup oatmeal
- 2 cups birdseed
- Nonstick spray
- Muffin tin
Instructions
Cut chunks of suet into 1 to 1 ½ inch cubes. Place suet in a pot.
Cook suet under medium-low heat. Do not cook the suet under high heat. The high heat will burn or scorch the suet. Cook the suet slowly.
Continue to cook the suet until it turns into a liquid. Lumps may still exist in the suet, but the majority of it will be a smooth liquid.
Add 1 cup of peanut butter. Stir the suet and peanut butter until a mushy mixture forms.
Stir in ½ cup of cornmeal and ½ cup oatmeal. Continue to heat the mixture to keep it from thickening.
Remove the pot from the stove. Add 2 cups of birdseed to the mixture. Stir the mixture until the seeds mix thoroughly.
Spray the muffin tin with nonstick spray. This will prevent the squirrel food cakes from sticking.
Fill the muffin tin with the squirrel food. Carefully spoon the mixture into the tin, and use a spoon to smooth the tops of the cakes.
Sit the squirrel cakes outside in the sun to dry. If it is not a sunny day, place the squirrel food cakes in the oven at 200 degrees for 1 hour. Lay the squirrel food out on the counter to finish drying.
Place the squirrel food cakes in a designated area in your yard. Keep the squirrel cakes away from your house to prevent the squirrels from ruining your home, garden, or lawn.
