Why are sandlappers called sandlappers?

There are two theories about the origination of the nickname, both dealing with the state's agricultural heritage:

* One theory is that the name refers to the way farmers would slap the sand (or sandy, loamy soil) off their shoes or "lappers" after working in their cotton and tobacco fields.

* The other theory suggests the nickname "Sandlapper" came from the slapping sound made by farmers' bare feet in the sandy soil as they worked in the fields.
