What kind of food does a puma eat?
A puma (also known as a mountain lion or cougar) is a carnivorous, apex predator. Its diet primarily consists of deer species, such as mule deer, white-tailed deer, and elk. Pumas also hunt rodents, livestock, rabbits, and smaller mammals. Occasionally, they prey on livestock such as calves and foals. To a lesser extent, pumas can take down larger prey including wild pigs, feral horses, bighorn sheep, and alpacas. Pumas primarily rely on ambush tactics to surprise their prey, utilizing their strong, muscular bodies to deliver a fast and lethal bite to the neck or skull. However, pumas are opportunistic predators and their diet can vary based on prey availability and habitat.
