List of Tortoises

There are more than 70 different types of tortoises on planet earth, each of them having different sizes, colors and shapes. Tortoises today can be found in every continent of the world except Antarctica. They have a long life, in some cases their life expectancy is recorded as much as 150 to 160 years. All tortoises are slow moving reptiles and are not good swimmers, as they can easily drown in deep waters.
  1. Galapagos Tortoise

    • Galapagos are the most famous and largest among different species of tortoise. They can grow up to 1.5 meters and can weigh between 550 to 600 lbs. Galapagos have an astonishing life span of 100 to 150 years and are mainly found in the Galapagos Islands. They are herbivores and require plenty of food to eat. They have the ability to store food and water for a very long time and can live without it for at least a year.

    Herman Tortoise

    • The Herman tortoise is from Europe. It is one of the most common pet tortoises; they can grow to a maximum length of 6 to 8 inches. Their life span is around 75 years and they usually eat green grass, leaves, vegetables and fruits. The Herman tortoise needs warm living conditions with an ideal temperature range from 27 to 30 degrees Celsius.

    Leopard Tortoise

    • Leopard tortoises weigh about 40 to 50 kg and are about 16 to 18 inches in length. They usually have a life span of around 50 years and can be found in African savanna where they wander around under hot sun. They have a hard shell and the ability to pull their body parts inside the shell so that nothing is exposed to a potential danger.

    Red-Footed Tortoise

    • Red-footed tortoises, which are also called cherry heads, are found in Southern and Central America. It has colorful face, legs and shell that list him among the most beautiful types of tortoises. They can reach to a length of 16 inches and have a lifespan of around 50 years. They can eat a wide variety of foods including leaves, green grass, fruit, vegetables and often red meat.

    Aldabra Tortoise

    • Aldabra tortoises are quite large like Galapagos. They can weigh about 250 kg and can be 1 meter long in length. It has a large dome-shape shell and strong stocky legs. Aldabra species of tortoise are extremely vulnerable to extinction as their population is is dwindling.
