Things You'll Need

  • Most common turtles live in standard fish aquariums. Preferring aquatic plants, decorations from the pet store to hide behind, rocks to rest on, and sometimes even a warming light, turtles will live long and happy lives in this safe environment provided they have access to clean water. Since turtles can be messy creatures and occasionally prone to disease, pet owners will want to clean out their turtle's aquarium on a regular basis to combat bacteria and algae growth.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the turtle, plants, decorations, and rocks from the turtle tank. Leave nothing in the tank and make sure you have access to all of the interior glass surfaces.

    • 2

Scrub the decorations and large rocks with a sponge or cloth and warm water. Use a toothbrush to remove any hard-to-reach crevices. Scrubbing the surface with a toothbrush or other bristled brush will help remove the algae and other scum.

    • 3

Wipe down the inside of the tank with warm water. Using a clean sponge or a cloth, wipe away all collected algae and other debris. Use a small cleaning brush to thoroughly clean out each corner.

    • 4

Scrub the interior of the tank with a Betadine antiseptic solution diluted in warm water. Using this mild solution will help kill germs and any bacteria that has grown in the tank.

    • 5

Rinse out the tank once more to remove any remaining antiseptic or algae. Replace the rocks, plants, and decorations.
