Instructions
Get an aquarium for the turtle to live in that has plenty of room for it to move around. The ideal size tank is 40 gallons or more.
Get a basking lamp. Turtles enjoy warmth and need it to survive. Purchase a lamp that emits 100 to 150 watts. If the lamp is too hot, the turtle will move away from the source of heat. The ideal temperature is 85 degrees F during the day and 70 degrees F at night.
Create a land area and a water area for your pet turtle. Use natural spring water that is free from chlorine and fluoride for the water area. Chemicals in tap water can be harmful to pet turtles. Fill out the land area with rocks and sand.
Set up an area for drinking water. This should also be natural spring water.
Buy turtle food and live crickets from the pet store. Your turtle will also require some vegetables. Dark leafy greens are recommended, such as dandelion greens and kale.
Change the water regularly, so that your turtle does not get diseases from contaminated water.
Wash your hands after touching your turtle. Some turtles carry the salmonella bacteria.
Steps to Taking Care of a Pet Turtle
Proper care of pet turtles is important, so they can live a long life. Turtles are often chosen as pets for their appearance and aquatic nature while still being land-based creatures. Turtles require little care, but without the proper environment and food, they can die.
