How to Feed a Blind Water Turtle

Turtles can be kept in outdoor ponds or indoor aquariums with equal success. These little reptiles are relatively straightforward to maintain, and can live for many years. Like most animals, this aging process can lead to blindness. Blind turtles are still able to eat for themselves, but need a little additional help when it comes to feeding them.

Instructions

    • 1

Set aside an eating place for your blind turtle. Put a bowl on the side of the pond or in his enclosure. Since the turtle can't see to gather food from the water's surface, he will need specifically placed food and organized feeding times.

    • 2

Feed the turtle every other day. Fill his dish with turtle food and set him in front of it. Although he will be able to smell the food, hold some up to his mouth and lead him down to the bowl the first several times you feed him.

    • 3

Feed the turtle leafy greens like romaine and spinach every day. Add fruit like tomatoes, bananas, strawberries and peaches. Include plants and flowers when available. Always take food out of his dish when it starts to go bad.

    • 4

Feed the turtle earthworms, meal worms and a vitamin supplement once a week. These will give the turtle protein and necessary vitamins and minerals. They are available at pet stores.

    • 5

Place the turtle back in his water when he is finished eating.
