How to Build a Waterfall in a 40 Gallon Tank

A waterfall can be a great addition to a 40-gallon tank or a similar container used as a terrarium to house pets like turtles or frogs. A small waterfall can be added to existing water pools using an inexpensive pump and rocks found around the yard. This will provide an interesting focal point as well as a new location for your pets to bathe and play.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

Fill a small container with water and place the pump into it. Test the pump to get an idea of how fast the water flows. If the pump has an adjustable rate, you can use this feature to attain a nice steady stream of water.

Arrange rocks around the pump. Build up a base of rocks that will conceal the pump and also keep your pet from getting at it. Use silicone caulk to secure the rocks in place, but do so in a way that will allow the pump to still be removed and serviced if necessary.

Arrange more rocks to create the path of the waterfall. You may choose to have a slowly descending bed of rocks for a slow water trickle or a steep drop off that will create a more dramatic fall. Again, use caulk to secure the rocks in position once you're happy with the set up.

Transfer the pump and assembled waterfall to the water area of your terrarium once the caulk has dried. Plug in the pump and power it on.
