Life Cycle of a Russian Tortoise

Russian tortoises are a popular, hardy pet that provide many people with a relatively low-maintenance friend. These animals come with some considerations, but can live a long life with the right care.
  1. Geography

    • Russian tortoises live in China, the Middle East and in the lower countries of what was once the USSR. They require a dry, arid environment in the wild.

    Life Cycle

    • Russian tortoises are born in eggs and double in size within their first six months. They reach physical maturity at four years and can live to more than 20.

    Personality

    • Russian tortoises can be quite aggressive toward other tortoises and are considered to be combative animals. When kept alone, however, they can be low-maintenance, hardy pets.

    Physical Features

    • As hatchlings, Russian tortoises are as small as 3 to 4 inches long. Adults can grow to be 8 inches in length. The turtles can range from bright yellow to almost black in color.

    Considerations

    • Many Russian tortoises sold in pet stores are in very bad physical condition from rough handling during capture and shipping.
