How to Catch Hibernating Snapping Turtles

Having a snapping turtle as a pet can be an interesting conversation starter, but catching one of these huge turtles can be very tricky. The average adult snapping turtle can weigh anywhere from 30-60 pounds and will live for up to 40 years. Most snapping turtles hibernate in the muddy areas of a body of water during the cold winter months and will generally awaken in May when the water temperatures raise.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the turtle. Most snapping turtles live in or around water during hibernation. Avoid a snapping turtle that you find on land because they are more likely to attempt to bite.

    • 2

Put on a sturdy pair of work gloves, in case the turtle attempts to snap.

    • 3

Approach the turtle cautiously. A hibernating snapping turtle is not as likely to attack, as it will not be as aware of its surroundings. However, caution is still warranted.

    • 4

Place one hand under the turtle̵7;s belly.

    • 5

Place the other hand on the turtle̵7;s back or tail.

    • 6

Lift the turtle and place it in a pet carrier or a sturdy box.

    • 7

Bring the turtle to its new home, such as an aquarium or small kiddie pool that has been filled with a few inches of water.
